ASHLAND — Ashland turned offensive in the first of two volleyball meetings with rival Eagle Point Tuesday, winning the matchup of Southern Oregon Hybrid 5A teams, 25-11, 25-10, 25-12.
The two teams — the only ones in the league — meet again Oct. 3 in Eagle Point.
"Eagle Point is our 5A competition here in the valley," said Grizzlies coach Robin Akpan. "So it was very exciting for us to come in and stay so focused and sweep them. We'll compete against them at least one more time this season, so it was nice starting it off like that on such a positive note."
Ashland, which visits North Medford on Thursday, evened its season record at 1-1.
Aggressive serving and strong offensive play characterized Ashland Tuesday. The Grizzlies were paced by junior setter Jordan Tilley and junior middle blocker Hope Baldrica.
"Tonight we were very offensive-minded," said Akpan. "This is only our second game. If you look at the scoring, quite a bit of it was off serves and off our attacking, so there wasn't much defense that was even played tonight."
Tilley had 25 assists and five aces. She served 25 times in the match. In the first set, she propelled Ashland to a 7-0 lead, and three of her aces came during the run.
"She's got a really nice jump serve," said Akpan. "She's a very competitive gal, so she definitely goes after the passers."
Baldrica, a junior middle blocker, had 11 kills and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Hannah Borgerson added five kills, six digs and a block.
Eagle Point dropped to 0-3.
