  • Those with questions and concerns about the upcoming Oregon health care overhaul set to begin Oct. 1 are welcome to attend a public meeting Thursday at the Smullin Health Education Center on Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center's campus.
Three one-hour seminars will begin at 4 p.m. and will cover various aspects of the health care reform.
The seminar is titled "Healthcare Reform and You" and will also be offered at several dates to be determined later this fall.
The forum comes as several major changes arrive in Oregon's health care field on Oct. 1, which is the day CoverOregon, the state's health insurance exchange, will open.
Oregonians will be able to shop for insurance through CoverOregon, which will contain a list of packages with varying costs and coverage options.
There are many misconceptions and rumors about the changes in health care, and Asante wants to make sure the public has the information it needs to make the best possible choices," hospital officials wrote in a news release.
"One reason we are doing this is that there have been a lot of surveys showing that people do not know anything about these health care reforms," said Jeff Caulley, RRMC's manager of strategy and business development.
Caulley said the seminar will be broken into 20-minute increments covering different aspects of the reform law. The first section will cover the basics of the law, followed by a primary care doctor speaking to the role of physician and patient relationships in the reforms. Finally, attendees will be given the chance to make an appointment with officials who will help guide them through the process.
"You hear a lot about bronze, silver and platinum insurance plans, but what does that all mean?" Caulley said. "We are going to answer those questions."
The seminar will cover topics such as the health insurance mandate, what needs to be done by individuals by Jan. 1, understanding financial assistance to purchase insurance, penalties for choosing not to purchase insurance under the mandate, how CoverOregon will work and the importance of having a primary care provider.
This seminar will be offered again on future dates in Medford, Eagle Point, and Grants Pass.
Walk-ins are welcome, but you may pre-register online at asante.org/healthcarereform. The website also contains additional information about the healthcare reforms, including a FAQ section.
