  • Josephine County investigators suspect that a Gasquet, Calif., man arrested Monday returned to rob the same banks in Grants Pass and Cave Junction repeatedly this year.
Mark Alan Cardinal, 58, was arrested Monday afternoon near Kerby about a hour after a robbery at a Chase Bank branch inside Fred Meyer at 1101 Grants Pass Parkway, Grants Pass.
Cardinal is suspected of robbing that bank and a Sterling Bank in Cave Junction twice each and knocking off a U.S. Bank in Grants Pass in April, officials said.
Monday's robbery at Chase Bank was reported at 11:38 a.m., according to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. The robber, who had a gun in his waistband, gave a teller a note demanding cash. He took an undisclosed amount of money and hurried away, police said.
Police said the robber's description matched that of a man suspected in other robberies, so they speculated that he might be driving the same mid-size sedan that had been reported near the other crime scenes.
A Jackson County detective and Oregon State Police investigators who were working a separate case in Kerby on Monday spotted a similar car driven by a man matching the suspect's description, police said.
OSP detectives and a trooper stopped the car at 12:32 p.m. in the 24000 block of Redwood Highway, outside Kerby, and took Cardinal into custody.
At the police station in Grants Pass, Cardinal was interviewed by local, state and FBI investigators, then arrested on three counts of first-degree theft, two counts of second-degree robbery and one charge of first-degree robbery, the release reported.
Those charges relate to robberies at the Chase Bank on Monday and on March 13 and a U.S. Bank at 1690 Allen Creek Road, Grants Pass, on April 18, officials said in a news release.
Cardinal also is suspected in robberies at the Cave Junction Sterling Bank on April 8 and Friday, Sept. 13.
Oregon State Police are still investigating, and more charges are expected, officials said.
