  • A California woman reportedly yelling bizarre statements and driving recklessly through a parking lot in north Medford struck a police car and eluded officers for two hours before finally being stopped by spike strips, Medford police said.
At 8:44 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a report of a reckless vehicle in the parking lot of Fred Meyer, 2424 Crater Lake Highway. Officers attempted to stop the woman driving a 2007 silver Ford Escape with California license plates near the gas pumps. The woman drove recklessly through the parking lot, even striking a patrol car, before fleeing south on Poplar Drive. Officers followed, but the pursuit was discontinued because of the woman's erratic and dangerous driving, police said in a news release.
Later at about 10:45 p.m., a Medford police officer spotted the silver Ford Escape pulling into the Circle K store at Riverside Avenue and Barnett Road. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the woman fled again, yelling, "Come on!" at the officer, Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said.
Officers pursued the vehicle to the parking lot of the south Fred Meyer on Center Drive and were able to set out spike strips that flattened all four tires. The vehicle finally stopped on Center Drive near Stewart Avenue.
The woman, identified as Lauri Lee Story, 53, of Tracy, Calif., was highly agitated and uncooperative, police said. After she refused to comply with police orders for several minutes, officers used a stun gun to take her into custody.
Story was arrested on charges of attempting to elude police, reckless driving, reckless endangering, hit and run and disorderly conduct. She was lodged in Jackson County Jail, where she remains this afternoon on $55,000 bail.
