ASHLAND — Ashland snapped a three-match losing skid with its most impressive performance of the season, sweeping Crater in a nonconference volleyball match Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym.
Junior middle blocker Hope Baldrica had nine kills and five blocks and junior setter Jordan Tilley had 21 assists, eight digs and four kills as the Grizzlies defeated the Comets 25-15, 26-24, 25-16.
Ashland dominated the first and third sets but had to fight back in the second in order to preserve the sweep. Down 24-23, the Grizzlies tied the match at 24 before an ace by sophomore Olivia Rooney gave Ashland a 25-24 lead. The Grizzlies then clinched the set on a powerful spike by Baldrica, who was set up by Tilley.
"For this team, up until this point we've gone into strings of momentum, and tonight we held our momentum and played as a team the whole way through," Ashland head coach Robin Akpan said. "We all just played as a team tonight."
Also for Ashland, freshman libero Myla Norvell had 14 kills and two aces, junior outside hitter Grace Lenthe seven kills and a block and junior outside hitter Georgia Williams five kills and three blocks.
"Tonight was a big step in the right direction in finding our consistency," Akpan said.
Crater fell to 1-5.
NORTH MEDFORD 3, EAGLE POINT 1 — At Eagle Point, Emily Carter played a versatile role and served out the final 17 points to end the nonconference match, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-9.
Carter, a sophomore outside hitter, registered 11 kills, 13 digs and five aces. Carter didn't miss a serve on 19 attempts.
Elle Bixler added nine kills for the Black Tornado (4-2, 1-1 SOH) and had a team-high hitting percentage of 44.
North Medford's Keisha Williams provided 12 kills and senior libero Katy Carter contributed 17 digs and three aces.
Jennifer Cavalier, a junior middle blocker, came off the bench for North and got 31/2 blocks in two sets.
ROSEBURG 3, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Roseburg, Roseburg (3-0) cruised to the Southern Oregon Hybrid win, 25-12, 25-15, 25-18.
For Grants Pass, Emily Henderson had 10 kills, Emily Gill 20 assists and Halee Rose 11 digs.
ST. MARY'S 3, LOST RIVER 0 — Lost River had trouble dealing with strong serving by St. Mary's and dropped the nonconference match, 25-11, 25-18, 25-15.
Senior Lily Harrie had six aces to pace St. Mary's from the service line.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, CHILOQUIN 0 — At Chiloquin, Cascade Christian captured the nonconference match, 25-16, 25-4, 25-16.
The Challengers are 4-4.
LAKEVIEW 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Lakeview, Theresa Frederick had five kills and Brittany Burns four for Illinois Valley in its District 1 opener.
Alex LaFlamme served well for the Cougars (1-4).
PROSPECT 3, BUTTE FALLS 0 — At Prospect, after a competitive first game Butte Falls had difficulty on serve receive in the next two and fell to undefeated Prospect, 25-23, 25-11, 25-5.
Senior middle Taylor Bernhardt paced Prospect with 16 kills. The Cougars (4-0, 2-0 MVL) received tough serving from Alee Pinkerton, Savanna Breiholz and Bernhardt.
The Loggers are 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league.
