Medford honors historic Holly Theatre, Sparta Building for restoration efforts

City honors Holly Theatre, Sparta Building and others for restoration work

The historic Holly Theatre and the Sparta Building have received bronze plaques from the city of Medford recognizing their renovation.

The Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission presented the 2013 historic preservation awards at Thursday's City Council meeting to property owners who have invested in the restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures.

Carl Coffman received his bronze plaque for the extensive restoration of the Sparta Building at the corner of East Main Street and North Riverside Avenue.

The JPR Foundation Inc. received a bronze plaque for the restoration of the exterior of the Holly Theatre at the corner of Holly and Sixth streets.

Three other buildings received Certificates of Design Merit.

Russ Dale, Muriel Ames and Rolar Yondorf rehabilitated the storefront of the L.C. Taylor building at the corner of South Bartlett and East Eighth streets. The building is being used by the Job Council.

The Miles Family Foundation enhanced the exterior of the Hamlin Block East building at 130 E. Main St.

Dorsey Parrish Investments LLC created a template for the Woolworth building at 33 N. Central Ave. that will be used to make signs on each of the building's entrances on Central Avenue.

All the projects received facade improvement grants from the Medford Urban Renewal Agency, said George Kramer, the historian who provided the consultation work for all the buildings.

"It was a great program," Kramer said. "Over 100 buildings got help in the downtown."

He said the Woolworth signs are replicas of the original fashioned out of high-density foam. "Most people think it's the original Woolworth sign," he said.

On the original sign it stated, "F.W. Woolworth Co."
