After months of off-season quiet, the Oregon State wrestling team was in the news Monday.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced that returning OSU All-American Taylor Meeks will make an appearance at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 2 in Fairfax, Va. Meeks, a junior from Orting, Wash., will wrestle Scott Schiller of Minnesota in the 197-pound match that night at George Mason University.
Meeks-Schiller is the third match announced for this year's Classic.
Meeks went 36-7 last season, won the Pac-12 title and finished fourth at the NCAA Championships. Schiller finished 29-6 and ended up fifth at the NCAAs. The pair met twice during the season, with Meeks winning 8-2 in a dual meet and 11-3 at the NCAAs.
Also Monday, WIN Magazine released its preseason rankings, putting Minnesota first, defending champion Penn State second and Oregon State sixth. The Beavers have finished in the top 10 each of the last two seasons, and are buoyed by a trio of returning All-Americans this year.
Scott Sakaguchi is ranked third at 149 pounds, RJ Pena is third at 157 pounds and Meeks is first at 197. Sakaguchi and Pena are both seniors who placed fifth for the Beavers a year ago.
No other Oregon State wrestlers cracked the top 20 in the rankings despite several returning starters.
The Beavers open their season Nov. 10 at the Mike Clock Open in Forest Grove.
