ASHLAND — A big weekend led to four Southern Oregon University athletes snagging Cascade Conference Red Lion player of the week accolades, the conference office announced Monday.
Cross country runners Summer Cano and Eric Avila joined women's soccer players Alyssa Bricker and Chloe Welch among the honorees.
Cano and Avila, both juniors, raced for the first time this season Saturday morning at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Cano was 18th overall in the 222-person meet and topped all non-NCAA Division I runners with a time of 22 minutes, 9 seconds on the 6,000-meter course.
Avila claimed seventh out of 243 runners — second among non-Division I entrants — by completing the 8,000-meter race in 24:38, which was 25 seconds better than his time at the same race last year. Avila earned the honor three times in 2012.
Bricker and Welch were culprits in the Raider soccer team's 3-0 win against Oregon Tech on Saturday.
Bricker, a senior defender, anchored SOU's defense as it recorded its third straight shutout and fifth of the preseason, and Welch tallied the go-ahead score on Paige Kilpatrick's assist in the 14th minute. The goal was the junior forward's first since the 2011 season.
The SOU football, volleyball and soccer teams are all home this week for conference contests, and the SOU Sports Hall of Fame ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday in the Stevenson Union on the SOU campus.
