Elise Snowden's serving helped lift North Medford to a 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17 victory over South Medford in Southern Oregon Hybrid volleyball Tuesday at the Panther gym.
The win gave North Medford (8-4, 4-1 SOH) a two-game sweep of the Panthers (2-5, 1-4) in conference play.
Snowden, a sophomore backup, produced some big service runs in the final two games after the teams split the opening two sets.
With the Black Tornado trailing 22-18 in Game 2, Snowden served five straight to give North a 23-22 advantage en route to the win. Then Snowden boosted North to a fast start in the clinching set by serving 10 consecutive points for a 12-4 Black Tornado lead.
"(Snowden) was hitting the exact area I was calling for and had good pace on the ball," said North Medford coach Erika Wright. "She was focused and did a great job stepping in off the bench."
North Medford received excellent production from middles Elle Bixler and Kathy Martin. Bixler, a senior, provided a team-high 18 kills and two aces, while the junior Martin blasted seven kills.
"They had an advantage in the middle," said South Medford coach Sarah Costa. "That was something we needed to fix but we didn't execute."
Junior setter Taylor Otoski dished out 22 assists and had two aces and Katy Carter, a senior libero, came up with 10 digs and took charge of the Black Tornado defense.
"(Carter) was great in serve passing and all-around ball control," said Wright.
The South Medford front line was paced by Claire Sporer (12 kills) and Nicole Bell (seven kills). Grace Sporer, a senior libero, went for 26 digs and a team-best four aces.
"It was a battle back-and-forth," said Costa. "It just came down to who could finish and we've had a hard time finishing."
GRANTS PASS 3, CRATER 0 — At Grants Pass, Emily Henderson had 11 kills to help lead Grants Pass to a 25-6, 25-22, 25-21 win in SOH action.
Amy Robinson recorded eight kills, Emily Dill 27 assists and Halee Rose 13 digs for the Cavers (9-5, 3-2 SOH).
Crater dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in league play.
ROSEBURG 3, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Roseburg, Roseburg defeated the Eagle Point in nonconference play, 25-11, 25-16, 25-10.
The Indians improved to 17-2, while the Eagles dropped to 1-11.
PHOENIX 3, MAZAMA 1 — Setter Karlie Richardson dished out 37 assists to help Phoenix escape Mazama with a 26-24, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21 Skyline victory.
Sydney Amundsen added 12 kills and Adriana Mereida-Ford 10 kills for the Pirates (8-2, 4-0 Sky), who also received a strong outing from defensive specialist Ashlyn Flynn (30 digs).
Mazama (5-5, 0-4 Sky) has lost four straight since opening league play with a 5-1 record.
HIDDEN VALLEY 3, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Murphy, junior setter McKenzie Cushman sparked Hidden Valley to a school-record 11th straight victory to begin the season with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-6 win.
Cushman passed out 34 assists to go with eight kills and three aces.
Outside hitter Megan Combe registered nine kills and 28 digs, while Lacey Maynard, a senior middle blocker, added seven kills for Hidden Valley (11-0, 4-0 Sky).
For North Valley (3-7, 2-2), Haleigh Wagman led the front line with nine kills. Also for the Knights, Rashelle Garcia provided 20 assists and three aces and Kady Kantola came up with 19 digs.
Southern Cascade Hybrid
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, LAKEVIEW 0 — Karlee Britton smashed a team-high 11 kills to go with three service aces as Cascade Christian swept Lakeview, 25-16, 25-13, 25-22, in a key Southern Cascade Hybrid matchup.
Trudy Burns added eight kills and four aces and Katelyn Smith five kills for the Challengers (7-5, 3-0 SCH), who won for the fifth time in their last six matches since starting the season 2-5. Alyssa Brown added 24 assists.
Lakeview (7-4, 2-1 SCH) had won six of its previous seven matches before suffering its first straight-set loss of the season.
ST. MARY'S 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — Dakota Rothfus notched 10 digs and Alyssa Pete had 10 service aces to help St. Mary's snap a two-match Southern Cascade Hybrid losing streak at St. Mary's High.
The Crusaders beat the Cougars 25-7, 25-21, 25-11, to improve to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in league play. Illinois Valley fell to 2-9 and 0-4.
ROGUE RIVER 3, CHILOQUIN 0 — At Chiloquin, Kortney Moore had 13 kills to lead Rogue River in the nonleague game.
The Chieftains are 2-4 overall.
