    Spartans fall short in opener

  • The Southern Oregon Spartans had a tough first act, falling 5-1 to defending national champion Idaho in their season opener at The RRRink on Friday.
    The Junior Steelheads, who won last season's USA Hockey Tier III Junior National Championships, raced out to a 5-0 lead on goals by Tyler Danylchuk, Kirk Van Arkel, Victor Carlsson, Kyle TenEyck and again by Carlsson.
    Southern Oregon's Mike Kowicki netted a goal on assists from Arturs Buss and Ben Henry at the 19:01 mark in the third period.
    Spartan goalkeeper Ian Dvorak made 23 saves.
    Idaho (4-0) outshot Southern Oregon (0-1), 28-20, and was 4-for-10 on power plays.
