Calvin Leland Smith was gathered to his father's side Saturday, September 28, 2013, after his earthly body slowly wore out. Formerly of the Rogue River Valley for over 50 years, Cal resided with his daughter and family in Gold Beach, Ore. since 2009. He passed to the other side peacefully at home.

Cal was the youngest of six children born to John Victor and Ruth Ericson Smith, in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada, January 4, 1927. He was born at home. The Smith's had emigrated from Kansas in 1918 which gave Cal dual citizenship, important when WWII came along. At almost 17 Cal back to the U.S. to work and join the U.S. Navy. Quartermaster Smith was a midshipman on the USS Quincy, a heavy cruiser based in the Pacific. After honorable discharge he attended the University of Minnesota on the GI bill, graduating with a degree in Forestry.

It was there that he met and married Minnesota native Lenore Cyphers, a Home Economics graduate, in 1952. The newlyweds headed West for the Forestry jobs in Washington, (where their daughter, Loretta, was born), California, and Oregon. In 1958 they settled in Medford, Ore., where Cal was the Consulting Forester with Industrial Forestry Assoc., traveling Southern Oregon helping local tree farm land owners manage their timber lands. In 1970 he purchased Pacific Forest Seeds which provides quality tree seed for reforestation worldwide. Until they retired they lived near the Eagle Point processing plant. He and Lenore "fathered and mothered" many young men through the years as they worked on tree planting crews, in seed collection and extraction. Cal loved to harvest, whether it was tree seed or the abundant cherries, peaches and berries of the Rogue River Valley.

Cal was active in Toastmasters, his local church, Full Gospel Businessmen's International, Aglow Fellowship, and Gideon's International. For years, as a Gideon, he ministered in the local jail, thrilled to see desperate lives changed by the love and power of Jesus Christ. Cal's faith, tender heart, honesty, transparency, integrity, and sense of humor touched many lives. His faithfulness and fun as son, brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather blessed his wife and family with incredible stability and peace. The powerful blessings of generations of those who put Jesus Christ first in their lives were and are felt by Cal and his family as he passed on those Godly values and blessings.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lenore; his parents and all his siblings and their spouses, Wes (Marge), Don (Harriet), infant Russell, Gordon (Irene), Vivian, and Victor(Irene) Smith. Cal is survived by his daughter, Loretta; her husband, Rory; and grandsons, Jesse (Alexandria) and Samuel LeGuee; and a number of nieces, nephews and their families.

A time of remembrance will be held at the Gold Beach Foursquare Church (meeting above the OSU Extension office at the Event Center on the Beach) during the regular 10:30 a.m. service, Sunday, October 6, 2013. A celebration of life will also be held in Medford Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation at 1:00 p.m. at Living Waters Foursquare Church, 2200 Roberts Rd., Medford, OR 97504.

In lieu of flowers, Cal would be blessed to know contributions are made to Gideon's Inernational Rogue Valley North Camp, PO Box 82, Medford, OR 97501, for Bibles to be shared locally and around the world.
