John Monroe Powell, Sr. was born July 28, 1961, in Georgetown, S.C., to Henry Dial and Mary Ann Powell. He and his younger brother Sam share a birthday. John went to meet his Lord and Savior September 21, 2013, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Yreka, Calif.

John loved trains. At 14, he joined the Historical Railroad Club and the Live Steamers Club in Medford, Ore. He was among the group of railroad enthusiasts that helped build the Railroad Park from its start into the fantastic place it is today. He always enjoyed giving kids rides on the miniature train there. He built a model train to G scale and ran it on tracks he installed in his back yard. John was also involved in working to get a dinner train set up in the valley. He spent time on the Blue Goose train, in Yreka, Calif., where he earned his Engineer certificate.

He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Phoenix, Ore. John played many specials on his beloved banjo, to the joy of all. He was a prayer warrior and often led congregational prayers. He was a devoted Bible teacher and preacher, leading services when asked to do so. John was called to be and then ordained as a Deacon. When he arrived at Heaven's door, he heard his Lord and Savior say to him, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."

John was also a minister with Truckstop Ministries. He poured himself into service and impacted many truckers. He used his banjo and his call to preach to minister to the truckers he met. We trust the Lord to fill His servant's shoes.

In November 2002, John became a member of the Mountain Trails Walk to Emmaus, a spiritual renewal weekend. He joined in fellowship with the other believers, playing his banjo as part of the worship team.

John is survived by his wife of 22 years, Susan Powell; sons, John, Jr., Michael, and Kevin; daughter, Jennifer; granddaughter, Alexandria Powell; mother and step-father, Mary Ann and Bill Carlson; brother, Samuel Rae Powell; aunt, Jamie (Alec) Black; mother and father-in-law, Jerry and Marlene Carlson; sister-in-law, Connie (Larry) Damon; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his special friend, Terry "Broman" Franks. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Dial Powell, in June 1968.

He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 10, 2013, at First Baptist Church, 4655 S. Pacific Hwy., Phoenix, Ore. A potluck will follow, please bring a dish if you can. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Railroad Park or Truckstop Ministries, 411 W. Barnett, Medford, OR 97501.
