ROGUE RIVER — The Cascade Christian girls soccer team controlled the action from the start en route to a 6-2 victory over Rogue River in District 4 play on Saturday.
The Challengers led 3-1 at halftime, taking a quick lead when Alex Haug launched in a goal from 30 yards out in the eighth minute.
Six minutes later, Sequoia Poston evened the score at 1 with a successful penalty kick for the Chieftains after a hand ball call.
Undaunted, Katelyn Fitch sent in a boot from 25 yards away in the 23rd minute to give the Challengers a lead that they would not relinquish.
Cascade Christian's Mackenzie Hickman scored in the 36th and 50th minutes. Her second goal was deftly chipped over the heads of several Rogue River defenders from 16 yards out.
Lacey Reen made it 5-1 after connecting on a 25-yard attempt in the 56th minute.
Irenna Stiebs tallied on a Poston assist in the 64th minute for the Chieftains (1-6, 1-4 Dist. 4) before Cascade Christian senior Katelyn Stephens completed the scoring with a stunning 30-yard goal in the 73rd.
Amanda Armas played strong defense and Jessica Weber played most of the match in goal for the Challengers (7-2-1, 4-1 Dist. 4).
"They worked hard," Cascade Christian head coach Mick Power said, "and Rogue River didn't just sit back. They were active. It was a good competition. They made us fight for it."
ST. MARY'S 6, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Cave Junction, junior Abby Coughlin had a hat trick and Ellie Hough scored two goals for St. Mary's in District 4 action.
Coughlin recorded two first-half goals and a tally in the 54th minute for the Crusaders (7-1-2, 5-0 Dist. 4), who led 3-0 at halftime.
Emily Elmore netted a goal in the first half and Hough scored twice in the second half.
Mikael Cusumano cashed in on a penalty kick for the Cougars (4-5, 2-3 Dist. 4) in the 77th minute.
Emily Alvarez, Viv Juncal, Anna Peterson and Taylor Holton each had assists for St. Mary's.
MAZAMA 4, PHOENIX 1 — At Klamath Falls, Amanda Skaff scored off a free kick from about 35 yards out in the 39th minute for Phoenix but the Pirates couldn't overcome an early 2-0 deficit in Skyline Conference action.
Phoenix, which allowed two late goals in the second half, dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-4 in Skyline. Mazama (3-4, 2-2) received two goals and an assist from Kaitlin Crowell.
KLAMATH UNION 3, NORTH VALLEY 2, OT — At Merlin, Bailey Pimentel's second goal came six minutes into the first of two 10-minute overtime periods and carried Klamath Union to the Skyline Conference win.
Pimentel scored in the 72nd minute off a free kick to tie the game at 2-all, then scored on a similar set play in the 86th minute for the Pelicans (5-2-1, 3-1 Skyline).
Jessica Bocchi also scored for KU in the seventh minute, but North Valley (5-2-1, 3-1) answered with a goal four minutes later by Venessa D'Arpino off an assist by twin sister Kerissa D'Arpino.
Kristen Cutting's goal in the 65th minute off a Venessa D'Arpino assist gave the Knights a 2-1 lead.
HENLEY 2, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Henley used a pair of second-half goals to edge Hidden Valley in Skyline Conference action.
EAGLE POINT 8, ILLINOIS VALLEY 2 — At Cave Junction, Jose Lopez-Ramirez had three goals to pace Eagle Point in nonleague action.
The others who scored for the Eagles (5-2-1) were Gerardo Lopez, Brock Wilson, Ronaldo Rincones, Caleb Strong and Tyler Wannamaker.
Zach Welch and Keith Lewin recorded goals for Illinois Valley (2-7), which trailed 5-2 at halftime.
PHOENIX 4, MAZAMA 0 — At Talent, Eli Espana managed one goal and two assists for Phoenix, which also got one goal and one assist each from Guadeloupe Flores and Ezequiel Flores to earn the Skyline Conference victory at Hagler-James Park.
Jose Mendez scored the first goal for Phoenix (4-2-1, 4-0 Skyline) in the 10th minute on a header off an assist by Guadeloupe Flores.
NORTH VALLEY 7, KLAMATH UNION 1 — At Klamath Falls, Trinidad Flores scored four goals to lead North Valley in Skyline Conference action.
Also scoring for the Knights (4-2-1, 2-2 Sky) were Heitor Almeida, Colbey Vest and Brandon Rodgers.
North Valley led 4-0 at halftime before Klamath Union (1-6-1, 0-4) scored early in the second half.
HENLEY 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 1 — At Murphy, Frank Ramirez scored on a header after a Zach Perrin throw-in for Hidden Valley in the 60th minute during Skyline Conference play.
Henley (7-1-1, 4-0 Sky) led 1-0 at halftime.
Freshman Alex Thornhill made several difficult saves and senior captain Thomas Fate played strong for the Mustangs (5-2-1, 2-2).
CANYONVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 3, ST. MARY'S 1 — Ivan Sandrali scored three goals to fuel Canyonville Christian Academy in District 2 action at U.S. Cellular.
The sweeper knocked in a header to finish off a corner kick opportunity in the 25th minute. He nailed a direct kick early in the second half before Nate Hoyt cut St. Mary's deficit to a goal in the 73rd minute with a laser from 40 yards out.
Sandrali got his hat trick on a 25-yard direct kick three minutes later for CCA (4-1, 3-1 Dist. 2).
The Crusaders are 4-2-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
