  • A Central Point School District bus driver was cited for careless driving after she crashed into a ditch Monday with one student on board, officials said.
Kerry Vaught, 41, and the one student who was on board were evaluated at a local hospital following the crash.
Vaught, of Gold Hill, was cited for careless driving, which is a traffic violation, according to Jackson County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jenny Hall.
The accident occurred at about 3 p.m. near the intersection of Ramsey Road and Highway 234. The bus was empty except for the single student and the driver, said Samantha Steele, district superintendent.
A Jackson County sheriff's deputy said the bus was headed south on Ramsey Road when it fell onto its side. The deputy said the driver and student weren't seriously injured.
The district contracts its transportation services to the bus company First Student.
Local company officials directed all questions to the agency's headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. Calls made to the company's media line weren't immediately returned.
According to Oregon Revised Statutes, a driver "commits the offense of careless driving if the person drives any vehicle upon a highway ... in a manner that endangers or would be likely to endanger any person or property."
The violation carries a possible driver's license suspension, community service and a maximum $12,500 fine, according to the ORS guidelines.
