Despite a gallant 10-year battle against breast cancer, Marcia Florence Zacheis of Medford, OR passed away September 30, 2013, just hours after her 75th birthday, at her son's home in Wrentham, Mass., with her loving husband and immediate family by her side.
Marcia was born in Boston on September 29, 1938 to Harold and Francis (Dunn) Thorn. She was raised in Dorchester, Mass., the oldest of six siblings. Marcia's middle name was for Florence Nightingale, and she always wanted to be a nurse. Upon graduating from Archbishop Cushing Central High school (ACCH), she was accepted into a four year nursing program, but had to bypass the opportunity to help support her family. Instead, she attended Chandler School for Women for a year to get business and secretarial training. Marcia held several different positions, including executive secretary to the President of Orscheln Co., a privately owned conglomerate located in Moberly, Mo. In 1972, while visiting Orscheln's, Sam Walton of Wal-Mart asked her to move to Arkansas to become his executive secretary. She politely declined. She last served as Records Administrator for the Orscheln Family trusts.
During all those years, reading medical articles was her hobby. At age 50, she quit the business world and went into nursing. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at the Moberly Area Junior College, then completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at University of Missouri, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and became a Registered Nurse (RN). Marcia and her son Mark were in nursing school and graduated together - the only mother-son combination to do so.
She and her husband, David, lived in Moberly, Mo. for nearly 30 years before moving to Medford, Ore. in 1995. Marcia worked as an RN at various women's clinics in Medford, at Oregon Health Science University (OHSU), as a private duty nurse, and as a commissioned Parish Nurse for Sacred Heart Church. She advised many individuals as to health, nutrition and supplements. Until the end, she was always being asked by individuals for guidance on health-related issues, which she gracefully and freely provided.
She had a deep love for people and an ultimate love for God. She was an animal lover her entire life. Her cat, Skyler, will truly miss her. He was by her side for 10 years. A bird haven in the back yard was one of her treasures. Swimming was her passion. Her life - a beautiful simplicity of joy and helping others.
Marcia is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, David; a son, Mark (Marta) of Wrentham, Mass.; sisters, Hilda Conley (Robert) of East Weymouth, Mass., Carole Abrams (Doug) of Harrison, Ohio, and Cynthia Hatfield (Robert) of Westerly, R.I. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, the oldest being Melanie Zacheis of Oxford, England; one great grandson; a sister-in-law, Earle Zacheis of Gig Harbor, Wash.; a nephew, Andrew Zacheis of Puyallup, Wash.; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. A sister, Carolyn Trainor, and a brother, Paul Thorn, predeceased her in death. Marcia's wonderful spirit, warm smile, and helping hand will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Marcia has many relatives and friends in the New England area. A memorial service will be held at the Saint Clare Church, 62 Crandall Avenue, Westerly, RI at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 14, 2013, with luncheon to follow.
In Medford, Ore., Saturday, October 26, 2013, there will be an informal gathering at the Zacheis home at 2278 Gene Cameron Way. Friends may drop in between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. to celebrate her life and to share stories of their experiences with her.
