Phoenix girls take sixth at George Fox meet

NEWBERG — The Phoenix girls placed seventh and the South Medford boys eighth in the elite division of the George Fox Cross Country Classic on Saturday.

For the Pirates, junior Nevina De Luca finished 16th in 18 minutes, 31 seconds — adding to her school-record personal best — while freshman Danielle Jantzer finished 28th in 19:16.6.

North Medford senior Ray Schireman was the top local placer, finishing sixth in 15:28.2, and the South Medford boys were paced by senior Ethan Cannon, who came in 16th in 15:57.3.

Tim McPherson's sixth-place finish led Cascade Christian to an eighth-place showing in the varsity boys division. McPherson, a junior, finished in 16:16.5. His teammate, junior Tristan Akery, finished 21st in 16:47.6.

In the varsity girls division, St. Mary's junior Rachel Bennion placed 17th in 20:03.6.


TRINITY LUTHERAN 3, BUTTE FALLS 0 — At Bend, Trinity Lutheran downed Butte Falls, 25-16, 25-4, 25-15, in Mountain Valley League action.

The Loggers dropped to 1-10 overall, 1-8 in league. Trinity Lutheran improved to 12-3 overall, 7-1 in the MVL.

Boys Water Polo

ASHLAND WINS TWO — At Ashland, Ashland beat Cottage Grove, 11-7, and Willamette, 17-3, and lost to West Albany, 10-9, at the Southern Oregon University swimming pool.

Taos Cadarette-Stewart had five goals, four steals and two assists against Cottage Grove and four goals against West Albany. Vincent Wright recorded nine blocks in the loss.

Against Willamette, Luke Abell had four goals, Erik Oline three goals and two assists and Ethan Croyle three goals. Wright had 12 blocks for the Grizzlies (8-2).

MEDFORD DROPS THREE — Cody Schultz tallied five goals in a hard-fought loss to Marist and Cyrus Christianson added three goals on the day for Medford, which lost to Marist, Cottage Grove and West Albany at the Ashland tournament at the SOU pool.

Medford fell to Marist 11-7, Cottage Grove 11-3 and West Albany 11-5. Geoffrey Pine had 24 blocks on the day for Medford.

Girls Water Polo

ASHLAND SPLITS — At Ashland, Ashland defeated Cottage Grove, 12-2, and fell to West Albany, 13-6, at the Southern Oregon University swimming pool.

Sadie Kasiah had three goals and two steals against Cottage Grove and two goals and two assists against West Albany. Sabrina Scoggin chipped in two goals and three steals in the loss for the Grizzlies (4-2).
