  • REEDSPORT — After a decade along the Oregon Coast, a plant where bridge parts were assembled and painted is closing and will lay off its remaining 51 employees in December.
American Bridge, based in Pennsylvania, made the disclosure Tuesday in a federally required notice of a mass layoff at its Reedsport plant.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports that when it opened, the plant was a shot in the arm for a community reeling from the loss of 400 paper mill jobs.
The company got a property tax exemption and saw the Reedsport plant as an edge in competing for smaller, western projects.
But it was soon hurt by the closure of a rail line connecting the coast to the Willamette Valley. The line reopened in 2011, but the plant didn't recover.
