  • Crews from Medford Fire-Rescue made quick work of a fire that burned a portion of a chain-link fence near an apartment complex pool late Tuesday, a blaze police say was set intentionally by a 14-year-old boy playing with a lighter.
The fire was reported at 9:29 p.m. in the 2000 block of Barnett Road. The fire was burning through the plastic lattice covering on the fence and had grown to about 4 by 4 feet in size by the time crews arrived.
Medford fire crews extinguished the flames in about a minute.
"It didn't amount to much on our end," said Battalion Chief Brian Fish, adding crews had no concern about flames spreading to nearby buildings. No one was hurt. The flames caused about $150 worth of damage.
Witnesses reported seeing someone set the fire before running off to his apartment complex. They later charged the 14-year-old with reckless burning and third-degree criminal mischief. The case has been referred to Jackson County Juvenile Services, police said.
