KLAMATH FALLS — The Phoenix boys soccer team sewed up the Skyline Conference title Monday with a 3-0 victory over Mazama Monday, and with only second-place Henley left on the schedule, the Pirates have an opportunity to complete a flawless league record.
Phoenix (9-2-1, 9-0 Sky) squares off against the Hornets (9-3-1, 6-2) on Thursday at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Eli Espana assisted on two of the Pirates' goals against Mazama. The first was for Alex Vela, who connected from 18 yards in the 29th minute.
In the 65th minute, Jose Mendez gave the Pirates a 2-0 edge on a free kick, and one minute later, Jose Ascencion put the contest out of reach with a 12-yard goal on a setup from Espana.
Phoenix had a 23-3 shooting advantage on the Vikings (2-11, 1-8). Goalkeeper Hector Rocha only needed to make two saves to record the shutout.
