Sauteed Onion-Garlic-Cheese Spread

5 tablespoons softened butter, divided
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped garlic
2 tablespoons chopped yellow onion
1 teaspoon sugar
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/4 cup finely chopped scallions
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon Tabasco (or other pepper sauce)
Crackers and fresh, cut-up vegetables, for serving

Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, onion and sugar. Saute, stirring continuously, until garlic just begins to brown (for about 4 minutes). Remove from heat.

Place garlic mixture into bowl of a food processor, along with the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, scallions, Worcestershire sauce, salt, Tabasco and remaining 4 tablespoons softened butter.

Process until mixture is smooth and creamy. Scrape mixture into a small crock or bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or until ready to serve with the crackers and vegetables. Makes about 3 cups.
