Raiders roll in second half to rout Pacific Union

ASHLAND — The fourth-ranked Southern Oregon University men's basketball team's slow start to the season was short-lived Saturday night against Pacific Union.

The Raiders' five-point lead ballooned in a hurry during their 88-45 win over the Pioneers at Bob Riehm Arena thanks to eight second-half 3-pointers. In the last 16 minutes of the game, they outscored the Pioneers 50-12.

Senior post David Sturner went for 20 points and 11 rebounds while Eric Thompson, his counterpart inside, had 19 points, nine rebounds and knocked down three straight triples to spark the run. They combined to shoot 18-for-28 from the field.

Kyle Tedder poured in 17 points and knocked down five from outside to tie Ryan Harbert for SOU's career record for 3-pointers. His total now stands at 220.

Sophomore guard Joel Spear had nine assists and a pair of steals and Tim Weber, a junior wing, keyed the Raiders' attack of Pacific Union's zone with eight assists. He also threw in two blocks.

The Raiders went 22-for-42 from the field after halftime.

They held the Pioneers (0-2 overall) to 23.1-percent shooting (15-for-65) from the field and 3-for-30 from 3-point range. Demetrius Deason paced Pacific Union with 13 points.

SOU will remain home for tonight's game at 7:30 against Simpson.

Women's Basketball

Southern Oregon 101,Pacific Union 73

At Ashland, Southern Oregon grabbed a quick lead and never let go in a victory in a game that spanned from late Saturday night to early Sunday morning at Bob Riehm Arena.

Sophomore point guard Ashley Claussen dropped 14 points, 12 assists and five rebounds to lead the Raiders, who won handily in both games of their season-opening SOU Women's Tip-Off Classic. They got off the floor at 12:45 a.m. and were scheduled to take a 5 a.m. flight to Idaho for today's exhibition game at Boise State.

The Raiders had six players in double figures for the second day in a row. Joining Claussen were Kristen Schoenherr (16), Carly Meister (16), Autumn Durand (13) and Demi Sahlinger (10). Tiani Bradford pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench.

SOU built a 14-point lead in the first six minutes and it was never less than 11 thereafter. It had a 62-41 advantage on the boards as Durand, Schoenherr and Brenna Anderson chipped in seven apiece.

Pacific Union (0-2) got 16 points and five rebounds from London Robinson off the bench.
