Assault probe targets FSU QB Winston

The Heisman Trophy candidate has 'Noles unbeaten, ranked No. 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State University star quarterback Jameis Winston is under investigation for sexual assault on a woman in a Tallahassee apartment last year, the Miami Herald has learned.

State Attorney Willie Meggs would not confirm that Winston is the subject of the investigation — which was first reported by TMZ — but said the 11-month-old complaint was turned over to the Leon County state attorney on Wednesday after media inquiries were made to the Tallahassee Police Department.

Police released a copy of the incident report, but redacted the name of the alleged victim and listed the perpetrator as "unknown unknown." Law enforcement sources confirmed to the Miami Herald that Winston is the subject of the report. According to the report, Winston is accused of using physical force to assault an individual older than the age of 18 on Dec. 7, 2012, at an apartment in Tallahassee.

No charges have been filed, and Winston has denied the allegations through his attorney, Tim Jansen.

"This case has been going on for over a year," Jansen told The Tallahassee Democrat. "The case was basically closed, and we're not sure why it's opened up. We've been cooperating with the law-enforcement agencies, and we're hoping to get a quick resolution in favor of Mr. Winston."

Police were called at 4:01 a.m. Dec. 7, 2012, according to the report. Photos were taken of the alleged victim's injuries and physical evidence was collected. The victim had been drinking before the incident, according to the report.

Winston was described in the report as "muscular" and "polite," and the motive for the incident was "sexual gratification."

The police report says the alleged perpetrator is between 5-foot-9 and 5-11. Winston is listed as 6-4 and 235 pounds.

Winston, considered by many the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, appeared at a news conference Wednesday evening but addressed only football-related questions. FSU said Winston and coach Jimbo Fisher would not be answering any questions about the matter "until there is resolution."

Winston, a freshman, has thrown for 2,661 yards, 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Seminoles, who are on track to play in the BCS national championship game, play Syracuse at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
