Marianette Johnston passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 26, 2013 in Elk Grove, California. She was 85. Born Marianette Meryl Wilcox on June 7, 1928 in Boise, Idaho and raised with her five siblings in the Pacific Northwest, she moved to California in her teen years and graduated salutatorian of her class at Glendale Academy. She attended Walla Walla College where she met the love of her life, Bruce Johnston of Medford, Oregon.
After receiving her two year degree, she married Bruce and returned to Walla Walla where he completed his final year of theology. She then joined Bruce in a lifelong partnership of great adventure and extensive travel, a life dedicated to service to God in church ministry, academia, foreign mission service and church administration. When Bruce retired as President of the North Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, they moved to their hillside retirement home in Medford where they renewed old friendships, made new ones and were renowned for their hospitality. Marianette continued her practice of providing a beautiful and comfortable home environment, surrounding them with her roses, bountiful wisteria and daffodils. She kept her field glasses handy to continue her love of bird watching.
Marianette is survived by her brother, Ken Wilcox of Grants Pass, Ore. Her surviving children are: Jerry and wife, Janette, with granddaughter, Maya; Kathy and husband, Ernie Frodahl, with grandsons, Elliot and Kevin; Cyndee with husband, Steve, and step-grandchildren Adam, Erik and Sarah Holm, and grandsons Owen and Chance Burgess, and great-grandson Henry.
We all love and miss you, Mom and Grandma. You lived your Christian faith and values by example and truly believed that if one dies in Christ you will surely live again. We honor your final written words of admonition, Be faithful. We are comforted that you will be resting with Bruce in what you called a cozy situation and will once again be reunited as you rise together to meet your Savior.
A memorial service is planned for 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 in the Medford Seventh-day Adventist Church. All are invited. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be sent to: Project Patch, 2404 E Mill Plain Blvd, Suite A, Vancouver, WA 98661 or www.ProjectPatch.org.
