SOU women sign two Washington standouts

ASHLAND — Lynn Kennedy justifiably went back to the well with the announcement of two early signings to the Southern Oregon University women's basketball team Monday.

The success that the ninth-year Raider head coach has had recruiting in his home state of Washington led him to locking up high school seniors Tessa Vanderpool, a 5-foot-8 guard from Vancouver, and Amber Hagar, a 6-2 post from Everett, for the 2014-15 season.

Eight of the 16 players on SOU's current 7-1 squad are also Washington products.

Vanderpool set the single-season assist record as a junior last season at Union High School, which she led to an 18-9 record and the Class 4A regionals.

Hagar helped Everett High to a 13-11 record and a 3A District 1 championship during the 2012-13 season with averages of six points and five rebounds.

SOU has only two seniors and 10 freshmen and sophomores on the current roster.

MEISTER HONORED — Southern Oregon sophomore post Carly Meister was named the Cascade Conference women's basketball player of the week Monday for the second time this month, the league office announced.

The 6-foot-2 Meister averaged 21 points and 15.5 rebounds in two games over the weekend at Oregon Tech's Midland Empire Classic.
