A four-car, chain-reaction crash in downtown Medford Monday sent three people to the hospital.

Medford police said Richard Backes, 71, of Medford was traveling east on 10th Street shortly before noon when a string of vehicles were backed up at the corner of 10th and Fir streets. Backes' Jeep Liberty was traveling about 20 mph when it failed to stop, plowing into the rear of a Suzuki SUV, police said.

The SUV in turn slammed into a Toyota Corolla, which then rear-ended a GMC pickup. Three people from the middle two cars were taken by ambulance to Providence Medford Medical Center for treatment.

Police cited Backes for following too closely.
