Setzer, Comets edge Mazama in opener

KLAMATH FALLS — Courtney Setzer's monster performance propelled the Crater girls basketball team past defending Class 4A state champion Mazama in their season opener on Thursday.

Setzer registered 25 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks as the Comets overcame the Vikings' roaring start to get a 62-59 victory at Mazama High.

The Vikings were up by as many as 12 points, 22-10, in the first quarter before the Comets went on a 26-13 run to close the half and pull ahead 36-35.

Destiny Fahndrich and Becca Heard dropped in 13 points apiece for the Comets.

The Vikings were led by Amber Lease's 17 points. Caileigh Smith had 16 and Megan Morris added 13.

ASHLAND 56, YREKA 55 — At Yreka, Hanna Greenberg hit a tie-breaking free throw with 1.4 seconds left as Ashland stormed back from a 22-point halftime deficit to stun Yreka in the first round of the Yreka Invitational.

Greenberg, who scored nine points, pulled down a rebound as the clock wound down and the score tied and was fouled just before the buzzer sounded. She hit the first shot, capping the Grizzlies' rally from a 45-23 halftime deficit in their season opener.

Junior guard Georgia Williams paced the Grizzlies with 21 points, Leilani Sukles added 10 and Michaela Dunn nine.

ST. MARY'S 55, WEED 26 — At Yreka, Calif., Rose Alvarez made three straight 3-pointers to start a 14-0 run in the third quarter and the Crusaders rolled to the season-opening win against the California team in the Yreka Invitational.

The Crusaders, who return most of the players from last year's team that finished second at state with a 26-3 record, limited Weed to single digits in each period.

Rose Alvarez made all four of her 3s and scored 12 points. Lillian Martin paced St. Mary's with 15 points, and Emily Alvarez scored 11.

The Crusaders today play Del Norte, which defeated Klamath Union in the first round of the eight-team tournament.

RVA SPLITS AT PIONEER INVITE — At Angwin, Calif., Rogue Valley Adventist capped the opening day of the Pioneer Invitational Tournament with a 39-19 victory over Napa Christian after El Dorado beat the Hawks 30-16 at Pacific Union College.

The Hawks' Kaelyn Scott got hot against Napa Christian with 21 points while Ashton Petrey was solid all-around with eight points, six assists and three steals. It was the first victory for the Hawks' first-year coach Marlene Slagle.

Scott led the Hawks (1-2) with six points against El Dorado. Petray pitched in five points and five steals.

The Hawks' tournament play continues today at 1 p.m.

ASHLAND 81, YREKA, Calif. 78 — At Yreka, Calif., Gabe Stanley carried Ashland down the stretch, knocking in a pair of win-securing shots as the Grizzlies won in Jeff Schlecht's coaching debut.

Stanley drilled a pair of free throws with four seconds left and Yreka was unable to fire off a quality shot. The Grizzlies were 17-for-23 from the charity stripe, including 10 of 14 in the fourth quarter.

Stanley racked up 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks while Colin Malcomb registered 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Grizzlies (1-0), who face Mazama today at 8:30 p.m.

The Grizzlies' Jackson Byers also scored 15 points and added five rebounds. Mitchell Harfst chipped in eight points and five boards.

Yreka was led by Ty Currie's 22 points.

GRANTS PASS YMCA KICKOFF INVITATIONAL — At Grants Pass, the Phoenix boys won eight of 11 events to take first at the Grants Pass YMCA Kickoff Invitational.

The Pirates' Ethan Shepherd recorded four victories for the Pirates. His individual wins came in the 200 IM (2 minutes and 19.64 seconds) and 100 free (53.1) and he was the final leg of the victorious 200- and 400-free relay squads.

Nick Leiter won the 50 free in 24.65 and Aaron Heard earned a win in the 200 free for Phoenix. Both joined Shepherd on the Pirates' winning relay teams. Also on the 200 relay team was Jasper Schurman, while Nigel Leonis completed the 400 relay team.

The St. Mary's girls were runners up to Henley. Grace Jovanovic had four total wins, taking individual honors in the 100 butterfly (1:01.86) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.87). She took the last leg of the Crusaders triumphant 200 medley relay and 200 free relay squads.

Also on both winning relay teams for St. Mary's were Alyse Darnall, Andrea Dow and Olivia Dow.

Breanna Sapienza had two individual wins for Cascade Christian, which placed fifth of seven teams.

She won the 50 free (24.72) and 100 backstroke (1:01.27).
