ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University men's basketball team is No. 2 and the Raider women are No. 17 in the latest NAIA rankings, which were released Tuesday by the national office.
Both moved up — the SOU men one spot and the women two, boosted by home wins over Concordia and Warner Pacific in the opening weekend of Cascade Conference play. Both are also 11-1 overall, which had never happened in school history.
Last week marked the first time since 1999 that the Raider men and women were simultaneously in the rankings.
Embry-Riddle (Fla.), off to a 10-0 start, claimed the top spot in the men's poll with nine of the 13 first-place votes. Southern Oregon received one.
The Raider men will host a 4 p.m. nonleague game Saturday against California Maritime, which advanced to the NAIA Sweet 16 last season and is currently 24th in the poll. The Raider women will visit Cal Maritime on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
SOU gets back to conference play Dec. 20-21 at Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho.
The other CCC teams included in the women's Top 25 were Oregon Tech (No. 14) and Eastern Oregon (No. 24). Northwest is 17th in the men's poll, while College of Idaho and Concordia dropped out.
