  • Bruce Dewey A. Braaten, son of Dewey and Helma Braaten, a 60 year resident of Medford, Ore. passed peacefully with family at his bedside at Providence Hospital December 12, 2013 after a sudden illness. He was 87 years old. Born in Fargo, N.D. in 1926, he graduated from Fargo High School. He proudly served in the Navy as a radio operator in WWII, and was in route to participate in the invasion of Japan.
    A self educated man, he worked 30 years at Medford Steel as Financial Officer until his retirement in 1988. Bruce volunteered for Providence hospital guild for 15 years as a grateful cancer survivor. Bruce also participated in church choir, actively participated in many community boards and charities, and was an avid competitive billiard player.
    Bruce loved to travel with his wife. They took many cruises, traveled the U.S. in their RV, wintered in Phoenix, Ariz. and also entertained many guests at their beach house in Brookings, Ore.
    Bruce is survived by his wife of 61 years, LaVonne; sons, Elliott (Lori), Bill (Cecila); and daughters, Denise, Mary Jo (Bill); six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and his special wit.
    A funeral service is planned at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Ascension Lutheran Church.
    Bye bye Papa we will miss you.
