December 15, 2013

NORTH BEND — Phoenix's Izzy Rubio and Casey Coulter of Grants Pass highlighted the effort for southern Oregon's wrestlers at the Coast Classic with championships Saturday during the 28-team event at North Bend High.

Rubio, a senior, earned the title at 170 pounds while Coulter was the champion at 113 after each went 5-0 in the two-day tournament.

Crook County was the runaway winner in the team competition, scoring 299 points to overcome Roseburg (219.5), Dallas (162.5), Hillsboro (144) and fifth-place Eagle Point (106.5).

North Medford sophomore Henry Cox advanced to the championship match at 106 but lost an 11-0 major decision to Cody Bibler of Dallas. Tyler Thomas reached the finals at 138 for Grants Pass but lost 14-10 to Century's Amari Sengsavanh.

Rubio, who was the Class 4A state runner-up at 160 last season, scored a 9-5 decision in the semifinals over Eagle Point's Hunter Hoeptner, who was third in state at the 5A level at 160 last year.

In the finals against top-seeded Scotty Dunagan of Dallas, who was the 5A state runner-up last year, Rubio scored an early takedown and maintained the advantage before finally securing a 5-4 triumph.

"He wrestled a great tournament all the way through," Phoenix head coach John Farmer said of Rubio. "The score (of the finals) was a little closer than the match. I never felt like we were in danger of losing it. He kind of dictated the match."

Coulter won his title by edging South Eugene's Jacob Cytrynbaum 3-0 in the finals.

Hoeptner rebounded from his loss to score a 10-8 decision over Crook County's Brendan Harkey in the third-place finals, while the Eagles also got a third from James McCoy at 160 and saw Ethan Pomeroy take fourth at 195 and Levi Pomeroy fifth at 126. McCoy needed only 29 seconds to pin Canby's Noel Hygelund for third place.

Crater finished ninth after Jason Comer (152) and David McCollum (220) each finished fifth and Nate Walters (145) and Micah Walker (195) took sixth.

North Medford was 10th thanks to the efforts of Cox, who pinned his first four opponents, and Trenton Wilson, who was third at 195 after beating Ethan Pomeroy 7-3. Skyler Black was sixth at 220 after dropping a 2-1 decision to McCollum.

Phoenix finished 11th and had Kyle Bradfield (152) and Braden Vega (160) each place sixth, while Grants Pass was 14th overall.
