Third Friday art walk

"Apple" by Richard Woods is part of the "Black and White with a Splash of Color" exhibit, showing through January at Art du Jour in downtown Medford.

Although Vogel Plaza will be dark during the Third Friday art walk, Dec. 20, Art du Jour and Rogue Gallery & Art Center will have refreshments, new and continuing art exhibits and lots of handcrafted gift items for last-minute Christmas shoppers.

Two exhibits opened this month at Art du Jour and will be displayed through January — "A Closer Look," watercolor paintings and pen-and-ink drawings by Georganna Happel, and "Black and White with a Splash of Color," mixed-media works by gallery artists, in the adjoining Salon.

Happel's work is always adventurous as the Eagle Point artist explores new media and styles. (For example, in one landscape, "Tarahumara Dwellings," Happel experimented by mixing her colors with copper and iridescent paints.)

"I don't really have a style," she says. "Sometimes I look at something and say, 'How do I do that? Can I do that? How do I make leather look like leather?' It's fun to take risks, and with watercolors, you can allow yourself to take those risks and lose control."

Happel's subjects range from zebras and trains to landscapes and flowers, but the current exhibit zooms in on these things — the engine of a motorcycle, the water on the lake and the dignity of a rose.

A reception with holiday treats will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 213 E. Main St. Call 541-770-3190 or see

Friday will be the last day that the Rogue Gallery's current members' exhibition will be displayed. For the nonjuried exhibit, "Interpretations of Self," members were asked to create works that represented themselves in some way — literally, symbolically or abstractly.

Enjoy food by Harry & David at the reception, held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 40 S. Bartlett St., Medford. Call 541-772-8118 or see

Parking in downtown Medford and in the parking structure on Sixth Street is free after 5 p.m. weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Artists working in all media are invited to participate in a rotating schedule for the Third Friday art walks. Call 541-779-2820 or email
