Crater Lake snowshoe hikes
Through April 27: Ranger-guided snowshoe walks are offered at 1 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. The walks will be offered daily from Thursday, Dec. 26, through Wednesday, Jan. 1. The walks last two hours and cover about a mile of moderately strenuous terrain. They explore forests and meadows along the rim of Crater Lake and provide lessons in how plants, animals and people survive in deep snow. Participants should be at least 8 years old, in reasonably good physical condition and prepared with warm clothing and water-resistant footwear. No previous snowshoeing experience is necessary. Snowshoes are provided free of charge, and there is no cost for the tour. The park does not collect an entrance fee in the winter. Reservations are required. Saturday, Jan. 25: Moderate, 7-mile snowshoe hike to Soda Mountain will travel the Pacific Crest Trail to the summit of Soda Mountain. A limited number of snowshoes may be available to borrow: call Morgan at 541-488-5789 to inquire. Otherwise, snowshoes can be rented at the Ashland Outdoor Store for $10-$15 a day. Bring a lunch, water, extra clothing, sunscreen, a camera, winter shoes and snow gear. Longest Night Mile
Friday, Dec. 20: Annual event will be held at North Medford High School. A slower mile race (for runners who expect to run slower than a 7-minute mile) will start at 6:30 p.m. A faster mile race will start at 7 p.m. For details and to register, see the race calendar at www.sorunners.org.

Siskiyou Velo Club
Some of the club rides listed below are leisurely; others intense. Choose one that's right for you. All rides include rest stops for coffee and social time. All riders are required to have safe bikes, wear helmets and carry a spare tube/tools and water. Instruction on safe riding and group ride etiquette are available on all rides.

Holiday Ski Party
Saturday, Dec. 21: Southern Oregon Nordic Club, Klamath Basin Nordic Club and Grants Pass Nordic Club will team up for a holiday party at Lake of the Woods Marina at 10 a.m. There will be beginner and novice lessons, a novice ski tour, a snowshoe tour and an intermediate ski tour. After a morning of skiing, the group will meet at the marina at 1 p.m. The club will provide the pizzas from the Marina grill. Fresh-baked cookies from home would be welcome.
