Two rural buildings catch fire

Two rural Jackson County buildings burned to the ground Thursday.

The Greensprings Fire Department responded to a fire in the 2000 block of Soda Mountain Road outside Ashland at 2:02 a.m. Four firefighters, the department's main engine, a brush fire engine and a water tender were put to use fighting a small cabin that was fully engulfed in flames.

Chief Gene Davies said the cabin's sole occupant awakened to the smell of smoke before fleeing the structure and calling 911.

"They escaped without injury," Davies said. "Unfortunately the cabin was destroyed."

Crews had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes and stayed on scene for two hours making sure the fire did not reignite. Fire officials said a candle left burning was the culprit.

Jackson County Fire District No. 3 responded to rural Eagle Point for a reported structure fire shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday. Crews found a 3,000-square-foot barn on fire in the 2000 block of Stevens Road, northeast of the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

"It's going to be a complete loss," said Rod Edwards, battalion chief for District 3.

Fifteen firefighters brught two engines and two water tenders from District 3 to help battle the blaze. There are no fire hydrants available in the remote area, necessitating the use of the tenders.

"This (was) a defensive fire. We're just trying to use our water wisely," Edwards said, adding there were some vehicles near the flames, but no additional structures.

No injuries were reported. Fire officials estimated about $150,000 in damage. The cause remained under investigation Thursday.
