• Tally, defense propel Pirates to win

  • BROOKINGS — Junior guard Bailee Tally had 12 points and six rebounds and Phoenix rode a suffocating defense to a 37-20 girls basketball victory over Del Norte, Calif., in the first round of the Brookings Invitational.
    Junior forward Kasey Hamilton had five of the 17 steals for the Pirates (4-2).
    Also for Phoenix, senior guard Amanda Skaff played all 32 minutes and had three steals, helping the Pirates hold Del Norte (5-3) to seven points in the first half and seven field goals for the game.
    Phoenix will play Brookings in the title game at 4 p.m. today.

    CRATER 83, NORTH SALEM 36 — At Salem, Bailey Bascom and Courtney Setzer combined for 36 points in the blowout for undefeated Crater.
    The Comets (7-0) led 50-14 at halftime in what Crater coach David Heard characterized as the team's best half of the season.
    Crater freshman point guard Mallory Heard dished out seven assists and sophomore point Cheyenne Scott had five assists and six steals.
    Setzer led the Comets with 10 rebounds and Becca Heard added seven.

    BROOKINGS-HARBOR 62, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 39 — At Brookings, Cascade Christian kept it close until tournament host Brookings-Harbor began to distance itself late in the third quarter.
    The Challengers (2-3) cut the Bruins' lead to five with about four minutes to play in the third, but Brookings-Harbor made a big run and took advantage of Cascade Christian's turnovers. The Challengers play Del Norte today at 1 p.m.
    Drew Farmer poured in 23 points and Francesca Farr added 15 for the Bruins.

    Senior post Kim Crow scored 14 points and senior guard Naviya Dixon had 10 for Illinois Valley (2-2), which had a five-point lead and the ball but couldn't prevent Riddle from rallying from six down in the fourth quarter. The Cougars had 35 turnovers.

    Torri Lilly and Hanna Kuykendall each scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds for the Butte Falls.
