• Black Tornado sweeps dual swim meets

  • ASHLAND — North Medford senior Geoff Pine won the 200-yard freestyle, the 500 free and swam for a victorious relay team to lead the Black Tornado boys to a sweep of Ashland and Cascade Christian in a three-way dual at the Southern Oregon University pool.

  • ASHLAND — North Medford senior Geoff Pine won the 200-yard freestyle, the 500 free and swam for a victorious relay team to lead the Black Tornado boys to a sweep of Ashland and Cascade Christian in a three-way dual at the Southern Oregon University pool.
    Lauren Hunter, another two-time individual event winner, paced the North Medford girls, who also won both their duals.
    Pine won the 200 free in 2:15.96 and dominated the 500 free in 6:06.82. He also swam the second leg for North's 200 free relay, which prevailed in 1:45.16.
    Hunter won both the 200 free (2:06.79) and 100 backstroke (1:04.40).
    Cascade Christian's Breanna Sapienza finished first in the 100 butterfly (58.15) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.95).
    For the Ashland boys, Cole Harding was the top placer in the 200 individual medley (2:15.81), the 100 free (51.97) and swam legs for two victorious relay teams.

    PHOENIX TEAMS SECOND — At Newport, Ethan Shephard had an outstanding meet, winning two events and anchoring a triumphant relay in the eight-team Newport Invitational.
    Lauren Speaks performed similarly, winning twice and anchoring a winning relay.
    Both teams placed second. Newport captured the boys meet with 70.5 points, beating out Phoenix (66) in the final relay. In the girls meet, North Bend won with 86 points, followed by the Pirates with 55.
    Shephard blitzed the field in the 100-yard freestyle. His time of 52.84 was 31/2 seconds faster than second place. He also took the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.61. He was on the first-place 200 free relay (1:41.68) with Nick Leiter, Jasper Schurman and Aaron Heard.
    The Pirates got seconds from Taylor Brown in the 500 free and two relays and a third from Heard (200 free).
    Speaks garnered the 200 individual medley (2:25.03) and 100 backstroke (1:14.02). Kylee Burks added a victory in the 100 back (1:10.02). Both swam on the winning 200 free relay (1:53.39) with Tiona Hurd and Emily Samudio.
    Phoenix was second in the 200 medley relay and got thirds from Burks (200 IM) and Samudio (100 butterfly).
    Prep Hockey
    NORTH MEDFORD 11, CRATER 5 — Chase Courtney had his first-ever varsity goal and his first-ever varsity hat trick to lead North Medford at The RRRink.
    Courtney finished with four goals and three assists, and teammate Jeremy Wu added three goals and two assists for the Black Tornado (2-0), which scored five goals in the second to open up an 8-4 lead. North's Drew Snowden also tallied his first varsity goal, and goalie Calvinn Casaday finished with 28 saves.
    Crater (1-1) was led by Dustin Gomez's four unassisted goals.
