  • GRANTS PASS — Eagle Point's Sherman Hammond was the runner-up at 138 pounds and three of his teammates won third-place matches to power the Eagles to second place in the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff Saturday.
Henley, with with two champions, won the team title with 179.5 points, Eagle Point had 158.5 and North Medford, led by a pair of champions, was third with 145.5.
Hammond, a sophomore, used consecutive pins to advance to the 138-pound quarterfinals then dominated his next match 7-0 before advancing to the final on a forfeit. In the championship bout, Henley's Connor Noonan beat Hammond in a 14-6 decision.
"He did a great job — got us some bonus points with pins and he's just a tough kid," Eagle Point coach Kacey McNulty said of Hammond.
Also for the Eagles, Michael Hammon (120), Levi Pomeroy (126) and James McCoy (160) placed third and Loren Denn (138) fourth.
Hammon pulled out a 3-0 decision over North Medford's Caleb Dix in his third-place match, bouncing back from a semifinal pin at the hands of Phoenix's Richard Orndorff, who wound up second.
Pomeroy wrapped up third with a two-minute pin of Mack Crandall (Lakeview), while McCoy needed even less time (1:04) to finish off Ruben Mendez of South Medford in another third-fourth bout.
For North Medford, 106-pounder Henry Cox and 195-pounder Trent Wilson both won decisions to capture titles.
Cox, who tallied three straight pins to get to the final, beat Michael Bresser of Henley 6-4 to capture first, and Wilson beat Jarred Montgomery of Dayton 4-1 in the 195 final. Wilson's championship victory followed a hard-fought 5-3 semifinal victory over Thomas Keeler of Gold Beach.
"I like to push the pace and open up leads and (Wilson) did a better job of that," North Medford head coach Phillip Lopez said. "He started to open up more, which is good, especially if he has aspirations of wrestling in college. I think in the past he had the habit of going into defensive mode, but he kept wrestling, so this is a good step for him for what he wants to accomplish in February."
Several other local wrestlers also had big days at the 29-team Winter Kickoff:
    • Nate Walter of Crater won a 6-0 decision over Logan Miller of Illinois Valley to sew up the 145-pound title.
    • Gary Jantzer of North Valley edged Izzy Rubio of Phoenix 5-4 in the 170-pound championship bout.
    • Senior Mason Montgomery of Ashland beat Issac Kibby of McKinleyville, 8-2, to claim the 220-pound title.
    • North Medford's Skylar Black won an 8-3 decision over Julian Northrop of Illinois Valley in the 220-pound third-place match.
