Crater girls falter in tourney title game

December 29, 2013

GRESHAM — Crater's 10-game winning streak to open the girls basketball season came to an end in the finals of the Gresham Union Tournament Saturday.

But it took a buzzer-beater to snap the Comets' string.

A late rally by Crater was spoiled by Shelby Enevoldsen's winning basket as Milwaukie pulled out a 48-46 victory at Gresham High.

After beginning the season with four straight loses, Milwaukie has posted three wins in a row.

The Comets (10-1) trailed by six points with one minute remaining in the game.

After junior post Courtney Setzer made a layup to cut the Mustangs' lead to four, Becca Heard came up with a steal off the press. The senior guard was fouled and connected on a pair of free throws. Then Becca Heard made another steal and Monica Heard tallied her only basket of the game on a layin to tie the score 46-all with 30 seconds left.

The Comets let Milwaukie play for the last shot and Enevoldsen drained a 12-foot fade-away jumper right before the final horn.

Cheyenne Scott paced Crater with 19 points. The sophomore guard was 4 of 6 on 3-pointers and scored 13 points in the first half as the Comets trailed 25-20 at the break.

Setzer, who was saddled with foul problems most of the contest, was limited to six points but came down with seven rebounds. Destiny Fahndrich added seven points and eight rebounds for the Comets.
