Defense propels Tornado to victory

December 30, 2013

LAKE OSWEGO — With stingy defense, the North Medford girls basketball team overwhelmed South Eugene for the first three quarters in the third round of the Nike Interstate Shootout at Lake Oswego High School.

And in the fourth, when the Axemen sank all five of their 3-pointers, the Black Tornado lead was still too much and North advanced to play in today's fourth-place game with a 36-33 victory on Sunday.

The Black Tornado (3-4), which finish the event against Grant today at 11:30 a.m., was up 12 with about four minutes to play. But not yet out of contention, the Axemen began to inch closer by knocking down their 3-pointers. Their final trey of the game was at the buzzer.

Savannah Bumgardner paced North Medford with 12 points and Sydney Thomas added 10 points and three assists. Joci Ellis pitched in eight points.
