  • SALEM — After a bumpy start to its season, the North Medford girls basketball team has turned things around by winning four of its last five games, appearing primed for next week's venture into Southern Oregon Hybrid play.
The Black Tornado defense looked sharp in Friday's nonconference game against Sprague, where North's starters were mostly unneeded in the second half during a 69-27 win at Sprague High School.
"We've been in nail-biters pretty much all season until now, so it was nice to get an early lead and to get some girls some playing time to see what they could do," said Black Tornado coach Tim Karrick of his team, which begins SOH play at Crater on Tuesday.
North Medford's last loss was to Class 5A powerhouse Hermiston in the second round of the Nike Interstate Shootout in Lake Oswego last weekend. North went on to win its next two games and earn fourth place at the event.
Against Sprague, most of the Black Tornado starters were on the floor for only around two quarters of play and still turned in solid performances.
Seniors Joci Ellis and Sydney Thomas played well in the first half. Ellis had 13 points and three steals and Thomas had eight points, five assists and a couple of steals for the Black Tornado, which boasted a 42-11 edge at halftime.

"We played well in that first quarter, got a big lead and we kept things rolling," said Karrick.
