  • Mary Margery Hief, 82, until recently of Ashland, Ore. passed peacefully Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Earlene Howard Hospice Home in Springdale, Ark.
Marge was born in Fort Smith, Ark. September 29, 1931 to John S. and Margaret Ocker Hill. Marge was married for 40 years to Robert (Bob) McGonigal who predeceased her. Her second husband, Jack Hief, passed away in 2005. They had ten wonderful years together.
Marge's family moved from Ft. Smith, Ark. to Long Beach, Calif. in the summer of 1942 during the war. In the fall of 1949 she attended Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. where her maternal grandmother had gone to college. At that time it was a two-year college, so in the summer of 1951 she returned to Long Beach. In August 1953 she married Bob McGonigal and they raised three children in the Long Beach area. They moved to Mission Viejo, Calif. in 1979. In 1987, she and Bob retired to Ashland, Ore. where she resided until she moved to Springdale, Ark. in April of 2013 to be close to her brother, Mike, and sister-in-law, Janet Hill.
No matter where Marge moved, she would become close friends with her neighbors in no time and would keep in touch with them over the years. She led an active life and enjoyed many activities. She worked at Ashland Community Hospital and served on the Foundation Board. She was active in her PEO Chapter, Tudor Guild, and various other organizations in her community, the First Presbyterian Church and more recently in the First United Methodist Church. She was an accomplished needle-worker and quilter. She supported the arts in the Rogue Valley by her attendance and gifts to the Rogue Valley Symphony, the Britt Festival, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In addition to being a gracious person, Marge kept a lovely home which she shared generously with friends and neighbors who enjoyed viewing displays of her various collections.
Marge enjoyed traveling, spending a year with Bob in their RV before moving to Ashland. She also travelled extensively in Europe with her second husband and with friends and neighbors. Marge was a generous, loving woman who shared her time, resources, and her beautiful smile with her many friends, neighbors, and grandchildren.
Survivors include two brothers, John Hill of Westminister, Calif. and Mike Hill of Springdale, Ark. Marge also leaves behind three children, Michael McGonigal of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., John McGonigal of Etna, Calif., and a daughter, Kathy McGonigal of New Jersey; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life for Marge Hief will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Ashland First United Methodist Church, on the corner of North Main Street and Laurel Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Ahsland First
    United Methodist Church.
