The Ashland Kiwanis Club named Gabe Young as its November 2013 Student of the Month.
Young is a 4.00 student who has taken five Advanced Placement classes and is in both the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society). He is also an editor-in-chief of The Rogue News, the AHS school newspaper. His academic honors include National Merit Commended Student, AP Scholar, AHS Outstanding Geometry Student of the Year, AHS Outstanding Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry Student of the Year, and AHS Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
Away from school, Young's main interests are music and sports. Having played saxophone since age 2 and oboe since age 10, Young plays in numerous ensembles throughout the Rogue Valley, including the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon, of which he is the principal oboist. In addition, he regularly plays music for weddings, parties, and events of all kinds. He is a four time Oregon state solo champion (three on oboe and one on saxophone) and has been selected to the all-state honor jazz band twice and the all-northwest honor orchestra once. Most recently, he was named as a member of the inaugural National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (a program run by Carnegie Hall), and participated in its summer 2013 performance tour of the U.S., Russia, and Great Britain, with world-renowned conductor Valery Gergiev and famed violin soloist Joshua Bell.
A three year starter on the AHS Varsity Soccer Team, Gabe was named co-captain his senior season. Despite being a defender, he scored six goals (second on the team) and was honored with a first team all-conference selection. Though soccer is the only sport he plays seriously, he is also enjoys football, baseball, and basketball.
Next year, Gabe plans on attending a four year university to double major in oboe performance and statistics.
The Ashland Kiwanis honors a senior student from Ashland High School each month during the school year. Each Student of the Month receives an award certificate and $50 in cash.
During the month of May, 2014, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis college scholarship.
