  • TALENT — Dan Gregory's resignation after 16 years on Jackson County Fire District No. 5's board won't decrease the group's familiarity with district operations, officials say.
Denis Knowles, a district volunteer firefighter for 26 years, was named by the board at its Tuesday meeting to replace Gregory. He was the only applicant for the position.
Knowles said he's concerned about talks of tax cuts as the district works to maintain quality and services.
"I think the communication needs to be better," said Knowles. "I'm also concerned with the training and certification that people have to face."
Knowles was a paramedic for 22 years of his service and lives near the district's Fire Station 2 at Emigrant Lake. He taught in the Medford School District from 1985 until 2012.
Gregory served continuously since 1998, including time as chairman.
"It's time for someone else," he said. "It's been wonderful and very enlightening. I couldn't be prouder to be part of this district."
Knowles will fill the remainder of Gregory's term, which expires June 30, 2015. Knowles said he might run for the seat in the May election next year.
