Cold-shooting Comets fall to Grants Pass

GRANTS PASS — Crater put up well over twice as many shots as Grants Pass in a Southern Oregon Hybrid girls basketball game Tuesday.

But few fell, and that resulted in the Comets falling, 39-34.

It was the Cavers' first SOH victory in six tries. They are 4-11 overall. Crater dropped to 14-4 and 3-3.

"We just couldn't make a shot," said Comets coach David Heard. "We were missing layups, missing 3-pointers."

Crater was only 7 of 42 from the field in the first half and 14 of 59 for the game.

Grants Pass attempted only 23 field goals but made 13, including four 3-pointers.

"They shot the ball really well," said Heard, noting the Cavers were 6 of 9 in the opening period and made two 3s en route to a 16-7 edge.

Grants Pass led 21-16 at halftime.

Courtney Setzer had 13 points and Destiny Fahndrich nine for Crater. Becca Heard pulled down 11 rebounds.

Taylor Chapman led Grants Pass with 10 points.

PHOENIX 66, KLAMATH UNION 46 — At Klamath Falls, Baylee Toney had 17 points and 15 rebounds and Phoenix's defensive pressure in the second quarter led to a sizable halftime lead in the Skyline game.

The Pirates (13-4, 4-1 Sky) outscored Klamath Union (3-12, 1-4) 17-4 in the second and led 34-14 at intermission.

Kasey Hamilton topped Phoenix with 18 points and added four steals, three assists and three blocks. Point guard Amanda Skaff had nine points and 10 assists.

Alvarez made three of her five 3-pointers in the second quarter, including one to end the half that gave St. Mary's a 32-18 lead.

The Crusaders (14-2) pulled away in the second half by outscoring Bonanza 31-8.

Junior guard Kortney Moore scored 13 points for Rogue River (1-11, 0-4), which trailed 31-11 at halftime.
