Cavers down Tornado in SOH wrestling dual

GRANTS PASS — North Medford had five victories — three individual wins on the mat and two by forfeit — but it wasn't enough as Grants Pass crowned nine winners in a 47-27 Southern Oregon Hybrid dual victory at Grants Pass High.

North Medford's Henry Cox earned a decision over Tyler Bellon of Grants Pass in the 106-pound weight class, while at 145 pounds, Cole Hornbrook got a win for North with a pin in 1 minute and 33 seconds over GP's Mason Roddy.

Skylar Black also picked up a quick pin for the Black Tornado, stopping Aaron Little in 27 seconds.

CRATER 45, SOUTH MEDFORD 30 — Crater rode five forfeits, two pins and a decision to a Southern Oregon Hybrid win at South Medford High School.

Crater's Cavin Gillispie pinned Grant Deschweinitz in 1:49 in the 182-pound match, and in the heavyweight bout Crater's Mike Rios pinned Ian Macgregor in 2:52.

South Medford had four pins, including Gary Steele's 16-second victory over Ben Baldridge at 132 pounds.

ILLINOIS VALLEY WINS SCL TOURNAMENT, ROGUE RIVER FOURTH — At Cave Junction, Southern Cascade League tournament host Illinois Valley defended its home turf with seven first-place finishes while Rogue River placed fourth out of five schools.

The Cougars racked up 258 points to runner-up Lakeview's 204. Lakeview boasted three individual wins.

Rogue River scored 84, getting it's lone victory from Johnny Hulseman who pinned his teammate Makai Jacob in 39 seconds in the 108-pound championship.

Illinois Valley picked up wins from Zachary Clark (115 pounds), Brandon Perez (122 pounds), Jacob Rubenstein (140 pounds), Logan Miller (147 pounds), Theo Hughey (172 pounds), John Britt (184 pounds) and Julian Northrup (197 pounds).

ROGUE VALLEY ADVENTIST 63, GILCHRIST 40 — At Klamath Falls, in one of Rogue Valley Adventist's best performances of the season Caleb Allen put up 29 points, 12 rebounds and three steals to keep the Hawks undefeated in Mountain Valley League play.

Jonathan James added 12 points for RVA (13-3, 7-0 MVL) while freshmen Brian Wachter and Trevor Haugen, who came off the bench, tossed in eight points apiece.

Despite the Hawks' outstanding effort on defense they weren't able to slow Gilchrist's Trenton Coch, who poured in 26 points.

The Hawks committed just nine turnovers.

ROGUE VALLEY ADVENTIST 46, GILCHRIST 23 — At Klamath Falls, Ashton Petray and Hannah Wood scored 17 points apiece to navigate Rogue Valley Adventist to a Mountain Valley League win over host Gilchrist.

Petray also had seven assists while Wood added three steals for the Hawks (4-13, 3-5 MVL), who attempted 76 shots as a team. Kaelyn Scott added eight points and Carli Zamora four steals.

ASHLAND SWEEPS — At Ashland, Ashland had no trouble against visiting Redmond, dominating the dual with wins of 84-36 (boys) and 107-33 (girls) at the Southern Oregon University pool.

Both the Ashland boys and girls took first place in all but one event. On the boys side, Ashland's Tristan Gavin, Cole Harding and Quinn Teece won two events. In girls, Ada Lawson and Kaya Boehm won two events apiece.
