Winterburn resigns from Jacksonville City Council

JACKSONVILLE — Dan Winterburn has resigned from the City Council, citing health reasons. Winterburn stressed preservation of the town's historic heritage and fiscal conservancy during his tenure.

In November 2008, Winterburn appeared to have won a council seat by a three-vote margin over incumbent Donna Schatz. But a state-mandated recount of the vote in December gave Schatz the win by four votes.

Winterburn was then appointed to the council in January 2009 to take the seat of Bruce Garrett, who had been elected mayor. In November 2010, Winterburn gained the second highest number of votes to win a four-year seat on the council in an at-large election.

Before his council appointment, Winterburn served on the city budget committee and citizen advisory committees.

The City Council will discuss the process to appoint a replacement at its meeting at 6 tonight, Feb. 4, in Old City Hall, 205 W. Main St.

An appointee would serve through December this year when the term expires.

Voting for a new term beginning in 2015 will be held on Nov. 4.
