  • Mayor Gary Wheeler is expected to proclaim Medford a "Purple Heart City" during the noon City Council meeting today.
Medford will be the first city in Southern Oregon and the second in Oregon to join in a movement honoring members of the U.S. Armed Services who have received a Purple Heart, according to the city's website. Jim Berg, National Purple Heart Trail coordinator, and James Klug, national public relations, director will be in attendance to receive the proclamation.
The Purple Heart decoration was initially created as the Badge of Military Merit by then-Gen. George Washington in 1782. The Purple Heart was made available to the common soldier and is awarded to any member of the Armed Services who has been wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the U.S.
The city of Medford will be installing signage at various locations to acknowledge the Purple Heart City designation, according to the website.
