The Medford Education Association released this statement after a community group not connected to the union took out a petition to recall Medford School Board members Sally Killen, Jeff Thomas, Marlene Yesquen and Kim Wallan.
"The MEA is not surprised there has been a recall against Medford School Board members. Over the last several months, board meeting after board meeting has been canceled, then they reschedule mid-morning when working parents cannot attend. Board members have been changing personal emails and refusing to answer their phone.
"We imagine people are frustrated because they are publicly elected officials that are supposed to be responsive to their community. In fact, they haven't held a public meeting since declaring a state of emergency and going into permanent executive session until the crisis is over.
"Teachers are questioning if the board truly wants what's best for the students. Although we had not heard officially that recall petitions were filed, we are not surprised. The petitions are obviously a community-driven movement."
