  • Former North Medford basketball player Danny Berger, now a junior with Utah State, has been named to the 2014 Allstate NABC Good Works Team, an off-the-court honor recognizing college basketball student-athletes for community involvement.
After going into cardiac arrest during practice in December 2012 and being saved by an automated external defibrillator (AED), Berger has worked to promote the use of and help raise money for AED's across the country, including at Kids Unlimited in Medford.
There were 117 nominees. Ten men players were selected — five from Division I schools and five from divisions II, III and the NAIA.
Berger, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward, returned to action this season after missing 26 games last year following his heart attack.
He is averaging 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in playing 12.6 minutes per game.
E.J. Singler, a former South Medford standout, will represent the Idaho Stampede in the NBA D League 3-point shooting contest during its All-Star festivities this weekend in New Orleans.
Singler will compete against Troy Daniels (Rio Grande Valley), P.J. Hairston (Texas), Adonis Thomas (Springfield), Patrick Christopher (Iowa) and two-time winner Booker Woodfox (Texas).
Singler has been one of Idaho's most efficient shooters from the field, particularly from beyond the arc. He has a team single-game high of seven 3s made on Jan. 18 in a 119-118 win over Santa Cruz.
For the season, Singler is 53 of 108 for 49.1 percent — the best in the shootout field.
The Southern Oregon Giants 11U baseball team will hold tryouts Feb. 22 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the team's indoor batting cages, 1201 Stowe Road.
