Gunshot leads to arrest for parole violation, meth, possession of a weapon

MERLIN — Oregon State Police arrested a Grants Pass man early today after he fled from a vehicle that was seen leaving the area where gunshots were heard in Merlin.

A state trooper patrolling in the 900 block of Galice Road shortly after midnight heard gunshots from the area of Romars Hideway Sports Bar & Grill parking lot. A few seconds after hearing the shots, the trooper saw a passenger car leave the parking lot, and he stopped the vehicle. A male passenger fled the vehicle on foot into a field, up a hill and over a fence, where the trooper lost sight of him.

A second trooper came to help search, and they found the man hiding in a shed on the property where he had last been seen. Police took Jasper Allen Paul Miller, 26, into custody after the troopers confirmed he was wanted on a parole violation warrant. An ensuing investigation revealed Miller had fired a handgun in the air while in the parking lot. He showed troopers where he attempted to hide the handgun, and it was seized for evidence.

Miller also was found to be in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine. Miller was lodged in the Josephine County Jail on the outstanding warrant and charges of a felon in possession of a weapon, unlawful use and carrying a dangerous weapon, and possession of methamphetamine.

The car's driver was not arrested.
