Attendance down to 44 percent at Medford schools

Attendance continued to drop at Medford schools as a teachers' strike dragged on for its ninth day with no end in sight.

Districtwide, 5,276 students out of a possible 12,113 students attended schools today, bringing attendance down to 44 percent, the Medford School District reported.

Schools with the lowest attendance were the three high schools: North Medford and South Medford at 30 percent and Central Medford at 22 percent. Ruch Elementary, where many teachers crossed the picket line, continued with the highest attendance, at 94 percent.

Hedrick and McLoughlin middle schools listed 39 percent and 40 percent attendance, respectively.

Friday was the fourth day of classes since the strike began Feb. 6. Attendance has steadily decreased, from 68 percent districtwide on Tuesday to 52 percent Wednesday and 48 percent Thursday.

Negotiations ended Thursday night in a stalemate and are not scheduled to resume until Tuesday at the earliest.

Schools will be closed on Monday for Presidents' Day.
