  • Richard Walter of Phoenix, Ore. passed away peacefully January 15, 2014 at Rogue Regional Medical Center at the age of 83. At the time of Richard's passing, he was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
    Richard was born July 16, 1930 in Flint, Mich. to Lee and Donna Walter, and had several brothers and sisters.
    In 1948, at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and served 7.5 years of active duty while serving as a machinist on the USS Haynsworth (DD-700). He was honorably discharged in September of 1955.
    On December 30, 1950, Richard married the love of his life, Virginia, and soon afterwards started their family. Richard and Virginia had two daughters, Vicki and Laurie, and one son, Alan. In 1966 they moved their family to Ashland, Ore. and lived in the Rogue Valley ever since.
    After moving to Oregon, Richard worked at Harry and David as an accountant from 1967 until 1992 when he retired.
    Richard was preceded in death by his wife in June of 2012 and is survived by his children, Vicki (Dan) Danuser of Gresham, Ore., Laurie (Barry) Orlando of Vancouver, Wash., and Alan (Brenda) Walter of Central Point, Ore.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    A private family ceremony will be held Friday, February 21, 2014 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A public celebration of life gathering will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Rogue Valley South in Phoenix, Ore. Friends are invited to attend.
